Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has praised Nigerian singer Yemi Alade for promoting African culture thorough her outfit at the 66th Grammy Awards despite not winning an award.
Agu, 69, shared his thoughts in a video posted on his Instagram page on Tuesday night, where he expressed admiration for Alade’s contributions to Afrobeats and African identity on the global stage.
In the video, he said, “Yemi Alade, you are a queen. You may not have won the Grammy, but you clearly won my heart. If nobody will say it, I, Chief Chiwetalu Agu, will give you your flowers while you can still smell them.”
The veteran actor commended her for not only representing Afrobeats but also using her outfit to celebrate African heritage at the award ceremony.
“You are putting African culture on the world map,” he said. “Your outfit was screaming, ‘I did not come to impress you, I know my roots.’”
Agu went on to highlight Alade’s attributes, describing her as talented, disciplined, and a role model for young women.
He added, “Do we talk about how decent and natural you have been as an artiste or how beautiful you are as a woman? You carry yourself as a lady, a role model. Yemi, keep being the inspiration you are to many young girls.”
Concluding his remarks, Agu expressed his fondness for the singer and jokingly wished her well in her personal life.
“Chief Chiwetalu Agu admires and loves you so much. I pray you find Johnny at the right time,” he said, referencing Alade’s hit song Johnny.
His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many fans applauding his support for the singer.
