In the wake of the gruesome killings of innocent travellers in Uromi, Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has assured that justice will be served, revealing that 14 suspects have been arrested and are being moved to Abuja for further interrogation.
The victims, hunters traveling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Kano State for Sallah celebrations, were attacked and killed by a mob last Thursday in Esan North East Local Government Area.
The brutal incident has sparked nationwide outrage, prompting swift action from security agencies and top government officials.
During a condolence visit to Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin in Abuja on Monday, Okpebholo strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
He assured that both state and federal authorities, including the Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation, are fully involved in ensuring justice.
“So far, they have arrested 14 suspects. They are being moved to Abuja for interrogation,” the governor confirmed.
“We have also set up a committee to support the families of the deceased.”
Senator Barau commended the swift response and urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
“This barbaric act must not go unpunished,” he stated. “Justice must prevail to maintain peace and unity in our nation.”
Okpebholo is also scheduled to meet with the Kano State governor to discuss further measures in addressing the tragedy.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been briefed on the situation and has reportedly expressed strong concern over the incident.
With nationwide attention on the case, all eyes are now on law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of the culprits.
