Tragic motor accident kills three secondary school students, injures 14 in Jigawa

The police have confirmed the death of three students of Government Girls Secondary School, Kaugama, Jigawa State, in a tragic motor accident while returning home for vacation.

DSP Lawan Adam, Police Spokesperson in the state, in a statement, said the incident which occurred on the Jahun/Kiyawa road in Jigawa State also left 14 other students injured.

“The incident took place on 15/03/24 around 1330hrs, when a vehicle, Sharon Galaxy with registration number TRN 498 ZY, driven by Rabi’u Abdullahi, aged 50, experienced a tyre burst near Kadirawa village while transporting the students from GGSS Kaugama to Gwaram local government their home town,” Adma said.

He said the driver lost control of the vehicle and somersaulted, as a result of which the occupants sustained severe injuries.

“The victims were rushed to Jahun General Hospital for medical attention. Eight students were treated and discharged, while the driver and six (6) others were referred to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, in Birnin Kudu for further treatment.

”However, three of the students were confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” Adam said.

He said the corpses were released to their families for burial.

The Police Spokesman said preliminary investigation revealed that overloading and worn-out tyres might have caused of the accident.
