The Senate has observed one-minute silence in honour of its late colleague, Senator Michael Atijosan Emmanuel Onunkun, popularly known as MAE Onunkun.

Thefrontrank reports that Onunkun, who represented Ondo West, now Ondo South, in the old Ondo State from 1979 to 1983, died on May 15, 2024 in Okitipupa at the age of 98.

The news of the death of Onunkun was brought to the floor of the Senate by the Senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, following a point of order raised at plenary.

Ibrahim, who came under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Order which is about personal explanation, informed his colleagues of the death of the Second Republic Senator.

The president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, while commiserating with the family of Onunkun, said “The Senate will send representation to see the family because it is important that we care for our own whether they are in the First, Second or Third Republic.”
