An Akure based Human Rights Lawyer, Tope Temokun, has called for the arrest of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State.
Temokun premised his action on the recent arrest of some people protesting against bad governance and current economic hardship in Akure, the state capital.
On 10 August 2024, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress in Ondo State, Kunle Ajayi Wiseman, and other protesters were detained and subsequently transferred from the Special Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) to the Anti-Cultism Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State.
This transfer was allegedly due to concerns that the orange berets worn by the protesters resemble those associated with the Aye Confraternity, a cult group.
Temokun argued that if the police are investigating the protesters for alleged cultism based on their berets, then Governor Aiyedatiwa should also be scrutinised.
Aiyedatiwa recently adopted a red beret as a campaign symbol, and his supporters have been seen wearing these berets at various events, with the police providing security at these gatherings.
Temokun stated that if the authorities are taking action against protesters for their choice of headwear, the same standard should apply to the governor and his campaign symbol.
