Fire gutted two petrol-laden tankers at an MRS filling station along the Numan Road, opposite Jezco filling station near the Yola International Airport on Tuesday evening.
The road leading into Yola, Adamawa State capital, was blocked as curious residents of the area rushed out to catch a glimpse of the inferno, ignoring the inherent danger.
Firefighters from the Adamawa State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN) are currently battling to contain the raging flames.
Security personnel have also arrived at the scene to secure the area. This incident adds to the growing list of tanker-related explosions in Nigeria amid an ongoing fuel crisis in the country, which is grappling with its worst economic downturn in decades.
Tanker explosions occurred in Nigeria at a time when petrol has become a precious commodity in Africa’s most populous country, which is suffering its worst economic crisis in a generation. In January 2025 alone, multiple tragic tanker accidents occurred.
