A life was reportedly lost and another sustained injuries in an autocrash involving a pilot vehicle of Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue state in Vandeikya Local Government Area, LGA, of the state.
It was gathered from a source in the area that the accident occurred at Ihugh, an ancient town in Vandeikya LGA.
The Governor who hails from Vandeikya LGA travelled home for Christmas celebration. He was said to be on his way to attend a programme in his hometown when one of the drivers on the convoy veered off the dusty road when his vision became blurred because of the nature of the road, and ran into a motorcycle rider.
He said: “the driver ran into the motorbike rider and one of the passengers on the bike lost his life while another sustained injuries. It was the dusty nature of the road that created the problem especially when you have more than one car on the road at the same time.”
Contacted, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Chief Solomon Iorpev who did not confirm the casualty figure, acknowledged that the ill-fated vehicle was one of the Governor’s convoy cars, he however debunked claims that the accident happened on the Governor’s convoy.
According to him, “the vehicle was alone on a mission when it got involved in an accident and this was caused by the dust on the road.
“The road was very dusty and there was an on coming vehicle at the opposite direction and while the vehicle driver tried to avoid the on coming vehicle it rammed into a motorcycle which caused the accident.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent, SP, Catherine Anene said the Command had yet to receive the report.
