Ondo students may lose admissions as WAEC withholds results over govt’s indebtedness
Scores of prospective candidates from Ondo State may lose admissions into tertiary institutions this year following the withholding of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for students in the state by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Thefrontrank findings revealed that the results were withheld due to financial indebtedness by the Ondo State government to the examination body.
Sources at the Akure branch of WAEC disclosed that the state government was yet to pay the required registration fees owed the Council.
“All l can tell you is that the Ondo State government is yet to pay the required amount owed the Council and that’s why the results were not released,” a source told Thefrontrank.
Reacting to the development, the Ondo State Government expressed surprise over the withholding of the results of students in the state by WAEC, claiming it had “fully paid the required registration fees.”
According to the State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Mr Olaolu Akindolire, WAEC has not provided any explanation for the withheld results.
Akindolire in a statement by the Ministry’s Head of Information and Media, Olaoluwa Meshack, reaffirmed that all necessary fees had been paid and questioned why WAEC would withhold the results at a critical time when students across the country are seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
The commissioner noted that further delay in releasing the results could jeopardise the students’ chances of securing admission into universities and other higher institutions.
He called on WAEC to expedite the release of the results to prevent any negative impact on the students’ future.
Speaking on the situation, a parent of one the affected students, Mr Oloro Oduban, appealed to both the state government and WAEC to settle their differences on time not to jeopardise the educational career of the students.
