Former spokesman President Obasanjo, Dr Doyin Okupe, has tendered an apology to the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr Mele Kyari, for his past criticism of the corporation’s leadership.
In a statement issued to commemorate Kyari’s 60th birthday, Okupe acknowledged his initial scepticism about the NNPCL’s ability to deliver on its promises.
He recalled how he had dismissed the potential of the corporation and laughed at the idea of its creation, aligning with the views of his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was also critical of NNPCL.
However, Okupe said his perspective had changed due to the “remarkable and multi-dimensional achievements” of Kyari and his management team.
Highlighting key accomplishments, he praised the transformation of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, the revival of refineries and the revitalisation of critical infrastructure.
Okupe particularly commended the significant reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at petrol stations, attributing it to NNPCL’s strategic initiatives. He said the development had brought some relief to Nigerians grappling with economic challenges.
The statement reads: “On this occasion of Mr Mele Kyari’s 60th birthday, I seize the opportunity to offer my heartfelt congratulations.
“Your dedication, leadership and achievements have not only earned the respect of your peers but also turned former critics, like myself, into proud supporters.”
Okupe also prayed for continued wisdom and strength for Kyari, urging him to sustain efforts to reduce the cost of PMS and improve the well-being of Nigerians.
