The crisis rocking the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) seems to have taken another turn for the worse as 11 out of the 17 members of the party’s National Working Committee(NWC), publicly disassociated themselves from the appointment of J.Y. Musa by the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum.
Musa, a lawyer believed to have close ties with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was recently appointed as the PDP legal representative at the Appeal and Supreme Courts.
In a petition letter dated January 21, 2025, and acknowledged by the registry of the two courts, the 11 PDP NWC members asked the courts to disregard the nomination of Dr. J.Y. Musa as PDP’s legal counsel in the Stay of Execution and Appeal filed by the embattled National Secretary, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu.
According to them, Musa’s appointment to represent the party was unauthorized. They stated that, in line with the PDP constitution as captured in Article 42, only the National Legal Adviser is authorized to appoint an external solicitor for the party, not Damagum.
“We, therefore, urge the Supreme Court to disregard the representation of J.Y. Musa or any other person appointed by the Acting National Chairman on behalf of the party in any appeal or application emanating from the appeal under reference,” the letter, sighted by DAILY POST, added.
