Nigeria’s contactless passport application system will start today, Friday, in some European countries to ease the burden of passport renewal for Nigerians resident in those countries.
The new system, which will allow Nigerians in the Diaspora to renew their passports online and will become operational from in the United Kingdom as the coordinating centre.
The NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nandap, in a statement issued in Abuja by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, said that the contactless passport application system would commence in Europe on Friday, Feb. 7.
Nandap explained that Nigerians in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland would be the first beneficiaries in Europe.
Thefrontrank reports that the service rolled out the contactless passport application system in Canada on Nov. 5, 2024.
Nandap explained further said the initiative was intended to simplify passport renewal process for Nigerians abroad in order to save time and reduce travel costs.
She disclosed that the system would only be for passport renewal and not applicable to first-time applicants or minors.
