Leading telecommunications provider, MTN Nigeria, has announced a significant increase in its data tariffs, with some packages rising by 50 percent, Thefrontrank reports.
The new pricing structure published obtained from its website affected popular monthly, and daily plans.
Revised MTN data prices showed that MTN’s 1.8-gigabit monthly data plan now goes for N1,500; this replaced the 1.5GB plan priced at N1,000.
Similarly, the 20GB data plan has been adjusted to N7,500, up from N5,500, while the 15GB plan now costs N6,500, a rise from N4,500.
The network is now charging N6.00 for text messages, instead of the previous N4.00.
Thefrontrank reports that increment in the price of text message reflects the 50 percent approved by the NCC.
Industry source disclosed that the telcos got the final approval for their new tariff plans on Monday and all the operators are in the process of adjusting their data and voice plans.
The development comes after NCC on January 20 approved a pegged telecom services tariff of 50 percent.
The hike sparked controversies in the Nigerian telecom sector.
While subscribers argued that the 50 percent hike should be reduced to 10 percent, the Nigerian Labour Congress had threatened a nationwide strike on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, until the federal government stopped it at the last minute.
