JUST IN: FG proposes N54,000 as new minimum wage, Labour kicks

The federal government on Tuesday proposed N54,000 as a new minimum wage representing an increase of N6,000 from the N48,000 earlier proposed.

Thefrontrank learnt that this was proposed at the ongoing meeting between the federal government, organised labour and the tripartite committee in Abuja.

A competent source in the negotiation committee said the Organised Labour will not accept the proposal as it does not reflect the sufferings of Nigerians.

“We were told not to speak to the media, because of conflicting reports on minimum wage, however, the federal government proposed N54,000, and we cannot accept that offer,” the source said.

“There was no response from the Labour side, because some of the critical stakeholders were not able to attend the meeting, so it has been adjourned to 4.00 pm tomorrow,” the source added.

The source noted that labour position is not likely to change any time soon.

The Organised Labour, comprising Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, had proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage.
