The Ondo State House of Assembly had in September 2023, in a desperate attempt to impeach the then Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, served him an impeachment notice.
It is on record that the notice was signed by 11 out of the 26 lawmakers that make up the Assembly.
Subsequently, Aiyedatiwa sued the House of Assembly on the planned impeachment and a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja stopped the Assembly’s move.
The lawmakers filed an appeal challenging the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to handle the matter and appealed against the court’s ruling halting the planned impeachment of Aiyedatiwa.
In a mistrust move, the bewildered Assembly withdrew its case in court on the planned impeachment of Aiyedatiwa premised it on “political solution”.
However, 15 months after, members of the Ondo State House of Assembly could not justify or explain to the people of the state, who were traumatised during the impeachment saga, what they meant by “gross misconduct”, but rather turncoat immediately it announced that Aiyedatiwa’s boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has died.
Besides, the lawmakers failed to explain to the people of the state the meaning of the “political solution” as the outcome of their let’s go dancing impeachment move.
Conclusively, the lawmakers’ action was clearly not for public interest but for “Stomach Infrastructure and Carica-chop” approach that dotted Nigerian political space.
Undoubtedly, as months go by, posterity is sitting at the corner waiting to judge the lawmakers for their actions while in office.
