
As prices of foodstuffs continue to soar in various markets in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, the Ewi-in-Council, on Monday dissolved associations in markets and warned traders against inflating prices of foodstuffs.
The council gave the warning in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with the leaders and some members of market associations.
It expressed concerns over the reports that most traders in the markets hide under middle-men to inflate the prices of foodstuffs such as tomatoes, pepper, vegetable, palm oil, locust beans, meat, garri, among others by dictating prices to the farmers that brought them to the markets for sale.
Dissolving various market associations fingered in charging exorbitant prices for foodstuffs, the Ewi-Council ordered that vegetables should not be sold more than N50, pepper, N100, garri, N700, while kilogramme of meat should be reduced to N4,500.
Speaking during the meeting, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe noted that the step was taken to make life bearable for residents of the town while appealing to the leadership of traders in the market to effect the directive.
Oba Adejugbe said chiefs would continue to monitor the directives in market places to ensure strict implementation and sanction defaulters.
