Death toll in Lagos building collapse rises to five
Five persons have been recovered dead from the debris of a collapsed building at 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos State, with five others rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 3:58 am on Thursday.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority(LASEMA) who raced to the scene for a rescue operation were able to save the lives of the survivors.
The unfortunate incident occurred when a set of three terraces under construction suddenly collapsed in the midnight hours.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who spoke on the incident, said search and rescue operations were swift leading to the rescue of some victims.
After the rescue operation, the LASEMA boss said: “A total number of dead is now five, adult males and a total number of five persons rescued and receiving medical treatment,” Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed.
Emergency teams at the scene of the unfortunate incident, include: Lagos State Rescue and Fire Service, Nigeria Police and other rescue team.
LASEMA’S excavator has been deployed to accelerate the search and rescue operations.
