Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist agitator and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, arrested in Finland for alleged terrorism-related activities, will spend Christmas in prison.
According to a Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Mikko Laaksonen, the country’s legal system does not permit bail.
Laaksonen explained that the charges levelled against Ekpa were not bailable.
“Finnish criminal procedure/coercive measures do not recognise bail procedure.
“Our procedure is based on, depending on the case, remand or travel ban as coercive measures for limiting freedom of movement for persons suspected of offences to which such measures are applicable,” Laaksonen disclosed.
Thefrontrank reports that the Finnish government had last week arrested Ekpa alongside four others on suspicion of terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and terrorism financing.
The Finnish police said Ekpa allegedly used social media to promote violence in the South-East region, targeting civilians and authorities.
Ekpa was remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court.
The Finnish Central Criminal Police said that other suspects were also arrested for allegedly financing terrorist activities.
According to Finnish authorities, Ekpa is scheduled to face charges in May 2025.
