Akure youths protest against EFCC’s raid on night clubs

Some youths in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday staged a peaceful protest against the incessant harassment and arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The youths blocked the popular Governor’s Office road in Alagbaka, obstructing vehicular movement and paralysing economic activities in the area for few hours.

Thefrontrank reports that EFCC had in an early morning sting operation on Saturday arrested 127 suspected internet fraudsters at Signature and Abah Clubs in Akure, while allegedly holding a “Yahoo Party” simultaneously.

A statement by the Commission’s Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated that the operation was in line with the established ground norm for such engagement and “devoid of any incident as the Operatives conducted themselves professionally.”

The youths, during the protest, demanded for the unconditional release of those arrested and profiled not to be internet fraudsters.

They described the EFCC raid as “pure brutality” which must be stopped by the concerned authorities.
