The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Ondo State Branch, has described the statement made by Mr Bola Taiwo, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, on the nine kidnapped members as “insensitive and unguarded”.
Thefrontrank reports that the nine surveyors were kidnapped at a site in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area of the State on Tuesday, March 4.
They were freed by their abductors Tuesday night after payment of N20 million ransom.
Taiwo, while addressing some residents who staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday at Governor’s Office against the kidnapping, blamed the victims for going to the site without security operatives.
The Governor’s aide wondered why the surveyors would be collecting huge amounts of money from their clients and failing to spend money on their security.
However, NIS described Taiwo’s comment as unfortunate and condemnable, stating that it has great implications for members of the institution in the State.
Its Chairman, Surveyor Kayode Bello, while addressing journalists in Akure on Thursday explained that the statement has exposed all surveyors to danger, making it impossible for them to carry out their daily work without fear of being harmed.
The NIS gave Taiwo 48 hours to retract his statement, and called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to review his appointment.
The institution believes that Taiwo’s comment is insensitive and unguarded, and that he should be held accountable for his words.
NIS emphasised that the government should prioritize the security of lives and property, rather than shifting the blame onto victims.
The Institution noted that surveyors, like other professionals, operate within regulated fees and cannot be expected to include personal security expenses in their charges.
NIS urged the government to collaborate with security agencies to ensure that all professionals, including surveyors, can work without fear of being harmed.
The institution says it is committed to the safety and well-being of members and will continue to advocate for their rights and interests.
