
The Headquarters 3 Division of the Nigerian Army successfully hosted the 2024 edition of the West African Social Activities (WASA) on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
The event, held at the Rhino Sports Pavilion, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, brought together officers, soldiers, their families, and a diverse group of distinguished guests, including government officials, traditional rulers, captains of industry, retired senior military officers, and representatives of security and paramilitary agencies.
The Special Guest of Honour, Plateau State Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, represented by the Commissioner for Land, Survey, and Town Planning, Barrister Peter Nyam Gai, emphasized the importance of WASA as a platform for fostering camaraderie among military personnel and celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
“This gathering underscores the bonds we share and reflects the hospitality and unwavering support the people of Plateau State extend to security agencies,” he noted.
Governor Mutfwang also praised the cultural performances, calling them a testament to Nigeria’s rich heritage and affirming the government’s commitment to promoting Plateau as a leading tourism destination.
In his opening remarks, Major General AE Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, highlighted WASA as a cherished tradition in the Nigerian Army, marking the conclusion of the year’s training activities.
“WASA celebrates unity, tradition, and professionalism, serving as a reminder of the Army’s deep-rooted customs,” he said.
He applauded the collaborative efforts of security agencies in ensuring peace and stability in the region and advised personnel to remain vigilant and security-conscious during the festive season.
The GOC expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, for his unwavering support, which has improved troop welfare and enhanced working conditions in the Division. He also commended the organizing committee for their dedication in ensuring the event’s success.
The event featured an array of activities, including cultural displays, tug-of-war competitions, award presentations, and tours of military units and formations.
The evening concluded with the lowering of flags, symbolizing the official end of the year’s activities, and the lighting of a bonfire to reinforce unity and camaraderie among soldiers and other security personnel.
