Supreme Court upholds election of Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto

The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed the election of Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State.

The apex court dismissed an appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and its candidate, Saidu Umar, filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election held in the state on March 18, 2023.

In its lead judgement delivered by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the court held that it found no reason to set aside the judgements of the Court of Appeal and the Sokoto State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that affirmed the election of Governor Aliyu.

The Sokoto State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal had dismissed the petition filed by PDP and its candidate, Saidu Umar, to upturn the election victory of Governor Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
